Arriving via Shannon Airport
Shannon Airport (SNN) is the usual arrival point for Clare golf trips. The airport sits beside Shannon Golf Club; west Clare bases are reached by road, not public transport. Shannon Golf Club describes itself as about five minutes from the terminal — useful on an arrival or departure day if you allow time for immigration, bags and car hire. To Dromoland is roughly 15–20 minutes; to Ennis about 20 minutes via the M18. To Lahinch, the driving distance is about 54–55 km — typically 40–50 minutes via Ennis and Ennistymon (N18, N85, N67). To Doonbeg from Shannon is roughly 65 km — about an hour in normal traffic. Kilrush on the Shannon Estuary is farther west, typically 60+ minutes from the airport. Allow extra time in summer traffic. Car hire desks operate at the airport — book ahead in peak season.
Driving in Clare
A car is the practical way to move between Clare's golf courses. West Clare golf runs along the N67 coast road. Verified approximate driving times (normal traffic, by car): Lahinch to Spanish Point ~11–15 min (~13 km); Lahinch to Doonbeg ~29–30 min (~32 km via N67 through Miltown Malbay); Doonbeg to Kilrush ~25–30 min; Kilrush to Kilkee ~20 min; Kilkee to Loop Head lighthouse ~26–28 min (~26 km). Times are not guaranteed — check conditions on the day.
Renting a car
Car hire is available at Shannon Airport from major international and local operators. For a golf trip, an estate car or SUV is worth considering for clubs and wet-weather gear. One-way drops to Dublin or Cork are possible with some firms but usually cost more — most Clare golf trips are return to Shannon. Book early for Irish Open weeks and peak summer dates.
Golf-club transfers
Championship clubs and resort hotels sometimes arrange transfers for guests — check when booking tee times or accommodation. For multi-course west Clare trips, most visitors drive themselves. Taxi coverage is thinner outside Ennis and the main towns; do not assume a late taxi from Loop Head or rural pull-offs.
Getting between West Clare courses
West Clare golf sits on the N67 from Spanish Point through Miltown Malbay, Quilty and Doonbeg to Kilrush and Kilkee. Spanish Point Golf Club is about 10 km from Lahinch. Doonbeg to Kilrush is the estuary run — short enough for a morning round at each if you are organised. Loop Head is beyond Kilkee; the lighthouse operators advise allowing 40+ minutes from Kilrush and 90+ minutes from Shannon Airport. Bus Éireann serves the coast but is not a practical way to hop between tee times with clubs.
Killimer–Tarbert ferry
Shannon Ferries operates a vehicle ferry between Killimer (Clare) and Tarbert (Kerry) across the Shannon Estuary. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Sailings run year-round with seasonal timetables — summer services include additional half-hourly departures on part of the day. Killimer is about 8 km from Vandeleur Walled Garden and a short drive from Kilrush; from Killimer to Doonbeg village is about 20 km via Kilrush. Booking online at shannonferries.com is recommended. Useful if your trip continues to Ballybunion, Tralee or south Kerry without driving via Limerick.
Central and south Clare golf
Ennis, Woodstock, Shannon and Dromoland form Clare's inland golf cluster — parkland, mostly, and mostly lower fees than the championship links. From Ennis to Lahinch is about 35–40 minutes by car — fine for a day trip, wrong if you expected to walk home after the Old Course. Shannon Golf Club to Ennis is about 25 minutes; Shannon to Dromoland about 15–20 minutes. East Clare Golf Club at Bodyke is another step inland — pair with the Inis Cealtra visitor centre at Mountshannon if a partner is not playing.
Travelling from Lahinch
Lahinch is on the N67. Spanish Point is the first obvious southbound stop (~11–15 min). Doonbeg is about 30 minutes south through Miltown Malbay and Quilty — the route confirmed on doonbeg.info from Lahinch: N67 south, not the R478 coast road to the cliffs. Northbound, the R478 leads to Liscannor and the Cliffs of Moher visitor centre (~15–20 min). Doolin is farther north on the coast road (~20–25 min from Lahinch). Ennis is inland via Ennistymon — roughly 35–40 minutes, useful for Ennis Golf Club, not for west Clare links in the same day. Corofin and the Burren National Park Information Point are inland northeast — a different half-day from the cliffs.
Travelling from Doonbeg
From Doonbeg village, Kilrush is about 25–30 minutes east on local roads via the N67 corridor. Kilkee is another 20 minutes beyond Kilrush. Spanish Point and Lahinch lie north on the N67 (~30 min to Doonbeg from Lahinch). From the Killimer ferry terminal, local directions put Doonbeg at about 20 km — through Kilrush and the L2034. The resort sits outside the village on the coast road; allow time to reach the first tee from your accommodation.
