Most Clare golf trips start at Shannon Airport. The instinct is to collect the car and head straight for Lahinch. Sometimes that is right. Sometimes you have a half-day, a late landing, or a morning flight home — and driving an hour west makes no sense at all.

Shannon Golf Club is beside the airport. The club describes it as about five minutes from the terminal — close enough that it can be useful on an arrival or departure day, without pretending you can land, clear immigration, collect bags and hire a car in time for a fixed tee time. Build in slack. Wednesday summer opens are a lower-fee option if your dates align.
The premium estate round
Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club

Dromoland is estate parkland — a different bill from Shannon, and a different reason to play. It suits golfers who want one polished inland round near the airport, or who are staying at the castle. From Shannon Airport to Dromoland is roughly 15–20 minutes by car on a normal day.
Ennis and Woodstock — the county-town pair
Ennis is the county town, about 20 minutes north on the M18. Ennis Golf Club and Woodstock are both on the outskirts — parkland contrast if your trip is otherwise links-heavy. They are not airport-side; they are where you base if Ennis makes more sense than Bunratty or Shannon town.
Heading west — Lahinch, Doonbeg and Kilrush
From Shannon Airport to Lahinch is about 50–55 km — typically 40–50 minutes by road via Ennis and Ennistymon, depending on traffic. Doonbeg is farther west, roughly an hour. These are not arrival-day courses unless you land early and accept that the day is mostly driving.
Kilrush Golf Club is not near Shannon in any meaningful sense — it is on the Shannon Estuary, an hour or more west. It appears here because golfers driving from Shannon toward west Clare, Doonbeg or the Killimer ferry often pass Kilrush on the N67 and may want a lower-fee parkland round on the way. That is a routing decision, not geography.
Shannon to Lahinch is a gateway drive, not a detour. Shannon Golf Club is a gateway round — if the timetable allows.
