Ennis is the county town — hotels, restaurants, and two parkland courses on the edge of town. It is not the right base if you want to walk to Lahinch after dinner. It is the right base if you want central Clare golf without airport-hotel prices, or if you are mixing inland rounds with one or two coastal days.
What Ennis works for — and what it does not
- Works: Ennis, Woodstock, Dromoland and Shannon — all within roughly 15–25 minutes by car.
- Possible but a commitment: Lahinch — about 35–40 minutes west via Ennistymon. Fine for a headline links day, not for daily rounds.
- Awkward as a day trip: Doonbeg or Kilkee — you are crossing the county. Base west instead.

Round 2 — Woodstock

An 18-hole parkland course on the outskirts of Ennis, with lakes, a river and mature woodland shaping the layout.
Woodstock is the more varied layout — lakes, woodland, more shape in the land. Ennis is the flatter, traditional parkland test. Play both if you are staying multiple nights; pick one if you are short on time.
Round 3 — Dromoland or Shannon
- Dromoland — estate parkland, about 20 minutes south. Pair with dinner at the Fig Tree if you are not staying at the castle.
- Shannon — useful if you are flying out from Shannon Airport the next morning and want a last round nearby.
The Lahinch day trip

Two links courses beside Lahinch village, led by the internationally renowned Old Course and complemented by the more accessible Castle Course.
Treat Lahinch as a full day — drive west, play the Old or Castle, eat in the village, drive back. Do not try to pair it with Woodstock the same day unless you enjoy rushing. Kilrush only fits if you are already heading west on the N67 toward Doonbeg or the ferry — not as a there-and-back from Ennis on its own.
Town, food and non-golf
Stay at the Old Ground or Temple Gate in the centre. Ennis Friary is a short walk from the hotels. Knox's, Cruises and Poet's Corner cover dinner and a pint — see food & drink. For east Clare, East Clare Golf Club and the Inis Cealtra visitor centre at Mountshannon are a longer inland run.
