Itinerary

Doonbeg Golf Base

Base on the west Clare coast at Doonbeg — headline links on the dunes, then Kilrush, Kilkee and Spanish Point without crossing the county.

Doonbeg is for golfers who want the Atlantic as their default view. The resort course is the reason most visitors come; the trick is building a trip around it without ignoring Kilrush — the best-value eighteen holes in the corridor.

Where to stay

The resort hotel is the straightforward choice on-site. Morrissey's in the village has rooms above the restaurant if you want the links without the resort bill. Kilrush and Kilkee offer more B&B and hotel options if you prefer a town base and drive to Doonbeg for the headline round — see Doonbeg and Kilrush.

Headline round — Doonbeg

Second round — Kilrush

Kilrush is member-run parkland outside the town — a different test and a different price bracket from the links. From Doonbeg village to Kilrush is about 25–30 minutes; from the Killimer ferry it is roughly 20 km to Doonbeg per local directions on doonbeg.info.

Third round — Kilkee or Spanish Point

  • Kilkee Golf Club — a nine-hole course on the cliffs, about 20 minutes west of Kilrush.
  • Spanish Point — north on the N67 toward Lahinch (~30 minutes from Doonbeg).

Ferry, food and non-golf

The Killimer–Tarbert ferry links west Clare to Kerry — a 20-minute crossing, useful if your trip continues south. Oileán in Kilrush for dinner; Morrissey's or the resort in Doonbeg. For a non-golf afternoon, Loop Head lighthouse or the Kilkee cliff walk — see things to do.
